Sex Trade Rally in South Korea

About 2800 prostitutes, masked to disguise their identities, marched near the South Korean National Assembly Compound yesterday to protest the recent police crackdown on the sex industry which has already resulted in the arrests of 1295 violators of the stringent new law.

Tens of thousands of prostitutes lost their jobs when the crackdown began on September 23. The protesters, who shouted "Protect our livelihoods" released a statement saying they were willing to pay taxes if the government would legalize their profession. The South Korean sex trade is estimated to bring in $24 billion a year, more than four percent of the country's GDP.
