Swiss prostitutes are being trained to use defibrillators to prevent clients with heart problems from dying on them, it has emerged.
Brothel owners in the Lugano area say electric shock treatment to restart customer's hearts is needed because so many elderly customers are using their services. The most recent victim was a pensioner, thought to be having fun with the help of anti-impotence medication. His death followed a series of other incidents, some fatal, in which heart attacks have claimed brothel customers in the area.
There are now 38 sex clubs and brothel in the Lugano area. And more are planned in order to accommodate the thousands of customers who pour over the border from Italy, where brothels are illegal. Around 80 per cent of the men who pay for sex in the area are thought to be Italian.

Pep Bonet, Noor (Forced identity: transsexual sex workers, Honduras), 2nd prize portraits stories World Press Photo 2009Raul Coto is an occasional sex worker. He uses the name Gladis, and knows he is HIV positive. San Pedro Sula is the second largest city in Honduras and has one of the highest instances of HIV in the country. Transsexual sex workers are particularly vulnerable to infection. Conservative family and religious values mean that gays and transsexuals are often victims of rejection and violence.
The "flat-rate sex" promotions, which are based on all-you-can-eat restaurants, have been introduced by brothel owners in a bid to revive trade that has fallen around 30 per cent in the economic downturn.

Other imaginative offers include rebates for pensioners and people on benefits, 10 per cent discounts for men who arrive by bicycle or public transport, and free shoe-polishing and clothes pressed for customers who stay overnight.
But it is the flat-rate deals – which are priced as low as £60 (€70) – that have attracted particular controversy in a country where prostitution is legal and generally well-tolerated. The promotion is popular which brothel owners who have to pay their sex workers a fixed daily wage whether or not they have any clients. But conservative politicians have expressed disgust at the innovation and have ordered a wave of police raids on sex clubs in an effort to bring it to an end.
“This is an outrageous violation of human dignity,” Heribert Rech, the Baden-Württemberg interior minister, told The Times.
Because the promotion is not forbidden by law, officers have focused their raids on immigration and hygiene offences at brothels where is has been introduced.
A brothel reputed to be the largest in Europe has been overwhelmed with interest after offering free entry for life to customers who have its name tattooed on their arm.

The manager of Pascha, which houses more than 120 prostitutes across its 12 stories, did not expect any takers when he put up posters advertising the tongue-in-cheek promotion. But more than 40 men have already come forward to have the name inked onto their arm in large blue letters, and the brothel's tattoo artist is having to work extra shifts to keep up with demand.
Herbert Manske, 46, was among the dozens of clients who queued up to undergo the procedure on the first night at the brothel in Cologne, Germany. "My wife doesn't mind," he said. "I get free drinks all night and can look at all the pretty girls."
Men who have the tattoo will save the brothel's £4 (€5) entry fee for life and get discounts on other services like lap dances, but will still have to pay for their time with the prostitutes who are self-employed and independent from the brothel.
Pascha, which is reported to attract 1,000 customers a day, hit the headlines in 2006 when it hung a huge high banner from its roof aimed at luring international football fans in Germany for the World Cup. The banner contained the flags of all competing nations including Iran and Saudi Arabia, sparking protests from Muslim groups.
Last year the brothel started a half-price discount for pensioners who visited in the afternoons.

The images, which are otherwise almost indistinguishable from the genuine notes, have been produced as part of a campaign to prevent women from the former Soviet state from seeking to work illegally in the EU.
They show underdressed women – obviously prostitutes – leaning against the examples of European architecture that have been printed on the currency's bills since its launch in 2002.
Messages warning about the real price of seeking black market employment abroad are printed across the top of the “fake” notes.
Sex trafficking is a serious problem in the Ukraine. Last year the International Organization for Migration estimated that 117,000 Ukrainians had been forced into prostitution or indentured labour abroad since 1991, more than any other Eastern European country.

Auckland City Council had sought a court injunction to stop the Boobs on Bikes parade, scheduled for Wednesday, saying it breached a bylaw banning offensive public events.
But Judge Nicola Mathers said while opponents may find the parade offensive or tasteless, the fact that 80,000 people had gathered for a similar event last year meant a significant number of people did not agree with the critics, New Zealand Press Association said.
